Severe thunderstorm in central NS today

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Halifax area. There is an ominous looking radar that appears to have a hook echo signature. I wonder if there will be tornado sightings in the central part of the province? Strange skies were seen in my area, but I am just south of the main thunder showers. Darn!

Now that's a trough of low pressure!

A Summer Nor'Easter

This system is just going to skim past Nova Scotia. Earlier in the week, the forecast models had it coming over NS, in which case we would ahve been in for some serious rain today. It still looks like the eastern tip of Newfoundland will feel its force, however, as warnings have been issued for that province.

It was interesting that although there weren't officially any marine weather warnings last night, there were a plethora of sailboats taking shelter in my Bay, which is something we rarely see. This one was one of the largest:

Lightning

There's an interesing article on Lightning in a recent online issue of The Walrus. Read it here.

Rain records broken in Toronto for July

Toronto received more rain during the month of July, 2008 (recorded at Toronto's Pearson Int'l airport) than ever recorded. There are more details about the statistics of recorded precipitation in the Toronto region at this site.

One thing that the general public tends to not hear about as much as the temperatures associated with climate change are the anticipated increases in precipitation in eastern regions of Canada. This could be a foreshadowing of rainier times ahead.
